[00:00.10]My First Job|[00:02.32]
My first "real" job was during
my last year of high school.|[00:06.43]
I had taken classes in
various business subjects.|[00:10.16]
In that last year of high
school, we could do a "co-op".|[00:14.02]
That meant we could
work part of the time|[00:17.56]
instead of going to school.|[00:19.12]
It would count as a
credit towards our diploma.|[00:22.17]
The place I got a job
was at a men's tailor shop.|[00:26.15]
The owners were a very
nice older German couple.|[00:29.75]
They had two other men
working for them, too.|[00:33.24]
One of the men had had
brain surgery for cancer.|[00:37.16]
He had a big, long scar all
around the top of his head.|[00:41.49]
He told me all about it.|[00:43.67]
He was always
happy and full of fun.|[00:46.46]
I thought he was very brave!|[00:48.52]
The tailor shop
made suits to order.|[00:51.32]
One of the salesmen
would measure the man,|[00:54.24]
and the customer would
choose a fabric and style|[00:57.48]
he (or his wife!) liked.|[01:00.59]
The people in the back
of the shop would then cut|[01:03.57]
and sew the suit.|[01:06.06]
The suits cost a lot of money.|[01:07.93]
There were also
suits already made|[01:10.48]
that the customer could
buy instead if they wished.|[01:13.65]
They could also
rent suits or tuxedos|[01:16.45]
for weddings or parties.|[01:18.63]
I worked at a little desk.|[01:20.56]
I answered the phone,
wrote letters, filed papers|[01:24.78]
and did some bookkeeping.|[01:26.34]
It was about a mile walk
from my school to work.|[01:29.57]
I passed many clothing shops.|[01:31.94]
That wasn't good because
I spent a lot of the money|[01:34.99]
that I earned in those shops!|[01:37.22]
I worked at the tailor
shop for almost a year.|[01:40.34]
It was a good experience
and helped me get|[01:43.45]
my next job with the
United States Navy.|[01:46.50]
That was fun, too!
