[00:00.42]Advice to a Student from a Foreign Country|[00:04.52] My advice to a student from a foreign country|[00:07.32] would be to talk, talk, talk.|[00:10.12] Talk as much as you can to the people|[00:12.92] who live in the place that you are visiting.|[00:15.35] Talk to them and practice your new language skills.|[00:19.70] Learn all the funny sayings and different words|[00:23.06] that make up their language.|[00:24.99] Talking is the only way to really learn a language.|[00:29.03] Listen to people and talk to people.|[00:31.89] If you talk to people,|[00:34.19] you will also learn about their culture.|[00:37.00] I have a friend from Japan.|[00:39.36] His name is Nori.|[00:40.60] He often comes to see me just so|[00:43.40] that he can practice his English.|[00:45.58] He gets confused about words that sound the same,|[00:49.25] but mean different things.|[00:51.18] He was asking me about the words "see" and "sea."|[00:55.03] I explained to him that they do sound the same,|[00:58.51] but they are spelled differently,|[01:00.51] and they mean different things.|[01:02.68] Nori is learning some of our funny sayings|[01:05.73] from different people.|[01:07.35] One morning I asked him how he was,|[01:09.84] and he said "alive and kicking."|[01:12.26] Another morning|[01:14.07] when I asked him how he was, he said "so so."|[01:17.30] He laughs about these strange sayings that we use.|[01:20.79] He is learning English quickly|[01:23.40] because he spends a lot of time|[01:25.64] with English-speaking people.|[01:27.76] He likes to have lunch with my friends and me|[01:30.24] because we ask him questions about his homeland,|[01:33.10] and he answers us in English.|[01:35.90] If he doesn't understand our questions,|[01:38.52] we spend time explaining what we mean to him.|[01:41.69] He says that he enjoys being here.|[01:44.99] He thinks that the people are very friendly.|[01:47.97] We enjoy speaking to him|[01:49.90] and helping him to learn English.|[01:52.39] We also enjoy learning about his country.|[01:55.44] It is enjoyable for us to meet new people|[01:58.42] and learn about new things.
